Learn More →St Edward's School, widely known as Teddies, is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school in Oxford, Oxfordshire, for just over 800 pupils aged 13 to 18. Founded in 1863, it occupies around 100 acres on Woodstock Road in north Oxford, close to Summertown and within easy reach of the city centre.
Pupils join in the Shell (Year 9), and from Year 10 most study for between eight and twelve GCSEs, with optional Pathways and Perspectives courses developed with the University of Buckingham. In the Sixth Form, pupils choose between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Families can choose full or weekly boarding. Full boarders stay in school at weekends, when just under half of all boarders remain on site, while weekly boarders may go home after Saturday sport and return by Sunday evening. Each half of term includes a formal leave weekend as well as the half term exeat. St Edward's School offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request.
The school has 13 houses, six for girls and seven for boys, each home to around 65 pupils from every year group. Every house is run by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a core residential team, a Matron and a House Nurse. Boarders live in supervised boarding houses with resident staff; room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
The termly weekend programme includes concerts, comedy nights, live bands and DJs, barbecues, cinema trips and house dinners, and on Sunday afternoons boarders often visit the cafes and shops of Summertown and central Oxford. The co-curricular programme covers sport, music, drama and the arts, outdoor pursuits and community volunteering.
The Learning Support department screens every pupil on entry and oversees access arrangements for public examinations. The school is registered with CReSTeD for dyslexia, and the Good Schools Guide lists provision for needs including dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism. Each pupil has a personal tutor, and a full-time child and adolescent clinical psychologist leads mental health provision with the Health Centre, School Counsellor and Chaplain, supported by trained Upper Sixth Peer Listeners in the houses.

St Edward's School does not publish a minimum English score for each year of entry. Applicants whose first language is not English provide recent Cambridge English or IELTS results, or an equivalent, with a recent school report, and English is assessed as part of the application. Pupils who need support on arrival are assessed against the CEFR scale.
EAL support carries no additional charge and is delivered through timetabled classes, after-school and drop-in clinics, and one-to-one sessions. Younger pupils may take up to three hours of EAL a week in place of a modern foreign language, working towards GCSE English Language, while Sixth Formers can use study periods for one-to-one sessions linked to their subjects.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. St Edward's School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
