D'Overbroeck's Oxford Overview

d'Overbroeck's is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 to 18. It operates across three sites in north Oxford: a Senior School for Years 7 to 11, The International School for overseas students aged 14 to 16, and a purpose-built Sixth Form centre on Banbury Road. Founded in 1977 as a sixth form, the school is part of Nord Anglia Education, an international group of schools.

The International School teaches a one-year IGCSE programme of five to eight subjects, including English, mathematics and a science. In the Sixth Form, students choose three or four A Levels from 38 subjects, with the Extended Project Qualification and BTEC and University of the Arts London courses as alternatives.

Around 240 boarders from more than 40 nationalities live in the school's boarding houses, and boarding is available from The International School through to the end of the Sixth Form. Students at The International School board termly, while Sixth Form students can choose termly boarding or weekly boarding from Sunday to Thursday. Some Sixth Form students live with host families arranged by the school instead.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Students aged 14 to 16 live in houses for their age group, and Sixth Form boarders in Islip, opposite the Sixth Form building, St Aldates in central Oxford or Westway. Rooms are single or twin, many en-suite: St Aldates has single en-suite rooms for around 50 boys and girls on separate floors, and Islip twin en-suite rooms for 60. House parents provide round-the-clock care, with transport to campus from city-centre houses.

Boarding Life

Younger boarders follow structured evening study with staff and visiting tutors, while older students plan their own timetables. Curfews are set by age and house Wi-Fi is switched off overnight. Weekend trips range from theme parks and zorbing to visits to London and Bath, and students can attend lectures at the Saïd Business School.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The school has experience of teaching students with dyslexia and other mild learning difficulties, and a specialist EAL team supports international students. Counsellors, a school nurse and Heads of House look after wellbeing, and the Personal Development programme covers topics such as culture shock and managing money.

Information for International Students and Parents

d'Overbroeck's welcomes international boarders at two stages: The International School for students aged 14 to 16, where most take the one-year IGCSE programme, and the Sixth Form from age 16. The Senior School for Years 7 to 11 is for day students, so boarding begins at The International School. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

d'Overbroeck's does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores, and every applicant whose first language is not English has their English assessed before a place is offered. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Students are tested again on arrival and placed in English sets by level, with English clinics, language clubs and a wider reading programme supporting progress, and the strongest sets take GCSE English Language and Literature.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. d'Overbroeck's is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents once a place has been confirmed. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
