St James' School Overview

St James' School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school on Bargate in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, close to the town centre. It educates fewer than 100 pupils aged 11 to 18 in a Senior School and a small Sixth Form. Founded in 1880 as a choir school for St James' Church, now Grimsby Minster, it keeps a Church of England affiliation and is part of Alpha Schools, an independent schools group founded in 2003.

Pupils take GCSEs in Years 10 and 11 and A Levels in the Sixth Form, where a flexible programme allows one, two or three subjects over one or two years. The Learning Hub offers personalised timetables with BTEC and functional skills options, and the Learning Lodge supports pupils with high-level special educational needs.

Boarding at St James' School

Boarding has been offered since 1959. Families can choose full or weekly boarding, and flexi nights are open to pupils in Years 7 to 13. International boarders have come from countries including Germany, Spain, China, Hong Kong and Vietnam. St James' School offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

All boarders live in Woodard House, a mixed house for up to 40 pupils opposite the main campus. Rooms are single or double study bedrooms. Boarders share a common room, a quiet study room, a large kitchen where they can cook for themselves and a small gym. Resident staff live on each of the three floors, with the Houseparents on the top floor, and the boarding office is always staffed.

Boarding Life

Evenings include supervised prep, and house staff supervise boarders on a rota through the week and at weekends. Boarders can join local clubs, with staff providing transport where possible. Outings include bowling, the cinema and the seaside, with longer trips to the Xscape Snowzone, York Dungeons and a trampoline park in Hull.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Mentors track each pupil's progress and offer emotional support, and the school nurse runs group Pods and one-to-one sessions on mental health and relationships. Inspectors have described the boarding house as welcoming and homely.

International boarders at St James' School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

St James' School accepts international boarders into the Senior School and Sixth Form, across Years 7 to 13. The school offers international students long-term boarding places and, subject to availability, shorter stays. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. In the Sixth Form, the flexible A Level programme lets students take one, two or three subjects over one or two years. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish minimum English levels for each year group. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils who speak English as an additional language receive individual support outside the classroom and targeted help in mainstream lessons, including work on subject-specific vocabulary, and inspectors have reported that these pupils make good progress. Small classes also give international pupils regular contact with their teachers.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. St James' School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, listed under The Saints Schools Limited, so it can sponsor international boarders once a place is confirmed, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for St James' School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination via Humberside Airport or the rail network, and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms St James' School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at St James' School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with St James' School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. St James' School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
