Taunton School Overview

Taunton School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Taunton, the county town of Somerset, educating children from birth to 18 on a single campus. The school is organised into a Nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep School for ages 7 to 13, Senior School and Sixth Form, alongside Taunton School International, which prepares overseas students aged 7 to 18 for the main school. Founded in 1847, it has been fully co-educational since 1976 and has welcomed international students for more than a century.

Pupils take GCSEs in the Senior School, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, BTEC courses and an international foundation programme for students preparing for university.

Boarding at Taunton School

More than 450 boarders from over 60 nationalities live across eight boarding houses, from age 7 through to the Sixth Form. Full, weekly and flexi boarding are available, and most full boarders in the Prep School stay in at weekends.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Younger boarders aged 7 to 13 live together in Thone House, a refurbished junior house at the heart of the school with lounges, an ICT suite and music practice space. Senior boarders from Year 9 to Year 13 join one of five houses, each with its own house parents: Fairwater, Wills East and Wills West for boys, and Weirfield and Woodyer for girls. Students on the international pathways from age 14 live in Foxcombe East, for boys, or Foxcombe West, for girls, two houses set in their own grounds with single, twin and triple rooms, a large common room and a student kitchen.

Boarding Life

Prep boarders complete homework each evening under teacher supervision. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 have Saturday morning lessons, and weekends include matches, trips into town and a Sunday outing. Senior boarders enjoy house socials, cinema trips, paintballing, surfing, visits to Exeter and Bath and inter-house competitions, with two indoor swimming pools, a climbing wall and a theatre on campus.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship. Taunton School International places students on pathways matched to their English level and prior education, and Sixth Form students have their own centre.

Every international boarder at Taunton School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Taunton School accepts international boarders from age 7, through the Young Learners Programme and the Prep School, and from Year 9 to Year 13 in the Senior School and Sixth Form. Taunton School International offers a Pre-GCSE year for Year 9, two-year and one-year GCSE programmes and a business foundation programme for older students, with entry depending on age and English level. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. In Year 9, students with English above CEFR B1, or IELTS above 5.0, follow the standard pathway towards GCSE, while those at B1 or below take a GCSE Access pathway with a reduced timetable and more English tuition. The school places students on suitable courses whatever their starting level, and an EAL department supports those who need it.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Taunton School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place is accepted, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Taunton School requires every student whose parents live overseas to have an adult guardian in the UK, nominated before the student starts. The guardian must be at least 25 and not in full-time education, provides 24-hour emergency contact, helps with holiday travel and accommodation, accompanies students under 16 to and from their point of departure and attends school events.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Taunton School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Taunton School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Taunton School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Taunton School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Taunton School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
