Queen's College Overview

Queen's College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school on a 36-acre campus on Trull Road, on the southern side of Taunton, Somerset. It educates children from nursery age to 18 across a Prep School and a Senior School with its own Sixth Form. Founded in 1843 by local Methodists as the West of England Wesleyan Proprietary Grammar School, it took its present name in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The school is part of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust, a national group of Methodist schools.

Pupils take GCSEs and then A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification available, and Sixth Form students also follow The Queen's Diploma, a programme that develops leadership, resilience and other skills valued by universities and employers.

Boarding at Queen's College

Boarding is offered from the age of 7, and the school welcomes around 110 international students each year from more than 30 nationalities, among them students from Germany, Nigeria, China and Hong Kong. Boarders follow a full weekend programme, and the school also hosts groups of international pupils for short immersion stays in its boarding houses during term time.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Younger boarders in Years 3 to 7 live in Cotlake, a three-storey family-style house within the Prep School with a lounge, games room and kitchen. Senior girls board in Hutton and senior boys in School House in the main college building. Each house has social spaces, study areas and a kitchen, and is run by resident Houseparents supported by boarding assistants, who are available during the evenings for homework help and pastoral care.

Boarding Life

Boarders join the daily co-curricular programme after lessons and Saturday morning activities, with on-site options such as swimming, badminton, yoga, baking and archery, plus discos, barbecues and pizza nights. Weekend excursions include visits to Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff, local beaches, adventure parks and ice skating.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A Learning Support Hub offers drop-in guidance, with tailored strategies for neurodiverse learners and interventions for social, emotional and mental health needs, and tutors provide regular academic mentoring. An on-site Health Centre works with Houseparents and Year Leads, and the Sixth Form Centre provides study space and careers guidance, including specialist preparation for competitive university courses.

Every international boarder at Queen's College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Queen's College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Queen's College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Queen's College accepts overseas boarders from the age of 7 through to the Sixth Form. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. Older students can join a one-year international programme, either a GCSE pathway leading to a guaranteed Sixth Form place or a Pre A Level pathway that builds English before the full A Level course. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Minimum English levels are published only for the one-year programme: CEFR B2 or above for the GCSE pathway, while the Pre A Level pathway suits students at B1 or below. For other years, British Guardianship confirms the level required during placement. Senior pupils who need EAL take specialist lessons in place of mainstream English or a foreign language, working towards IGCSE English as a Second Language in Year 11 and IELTS in the Sixth Form.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Queen's College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Queen's College requires boarders whose parents live overseas to nominate a UK guardian before they join. The guardian may be a relative, a family friend or a guardianship organisation, must be an English-speaking adult householder who is not a student, and handles travel, half terms and emergencies.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Queen's College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Queen's College runs term-time immersion programmes of one, two or four weeks for groups of students aged 7 to 14, who live alongside UK boarders, follow the full timetable and join the weekend activity and excursion programme. Families considering a shorter stay can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Queen's College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Queen's College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Queen's College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Queen's College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
