Learn More →King's College Taunton is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Taunton, Somerset, for children from 6 months to 18 years. It runs as one school on two sites: King's College Prep for children up to 13, and the senior school and Sixth Form on the main campus. Founded in 1880 by Canon Nathaniel Woodard, the school is part of Woodard Schools, a national group of Church of England schools.
Senior pupils join at 13 and spend Year 9 preparing for a two-year GCSE course. The Sixth Form offers A Levels, BTEC courses in Sport and Business and the Extended Project Qualification.
The Good Schools Guide lists around 170 boarders, close to half of the senior school, from the South West, the wider UK and overseas. Prep boarding is open to boys and girls from age 7 on a full-time, flexi or occasional basis, and many of the full-time prep boarders come from overseas. In the senior school, families choose full boarding or weekly boarding from Monday to Saturday, and boarding continues into the Sixth Form.
Senior pupils belong to one of six houses, three for boys and three for girls: Bishop Fox, Carpenter, Meynell, Taylor, Tuckwell and Woodard. Boarders and day pupils share the houses, which offer study areas, common rooms, quiet zones and mindfulness spaces. Prep boarders live in one house arranged in three areas around a common room; a houseparent leads a team of teachers and graduate gap-year assistants who provide supervision around the clock.
Prep evenings bring games in the sports hall and woods, arts and crafts and, in warm weather, the outdoor pool. Weekend outings include the cinema, theatre, water parks, the beach, go-karting, bowling and walks on the Quantock Hills. Senior houses run their own social and charity events and inter-house competitions.
Every pupil is screened for learning needs on joining. The Learning Strategies department provides free one-to-one and small-group lessons, adapted curricula and bespoke pathways for pupils with autism, and the prep team includes specialists in dyslexia and dyscalculia. A Futures Programme gives Sixth Formers individual university and careers guidance.

King's College Taunton offers boarding from age 7 in the Prep and through the senior school and Sixth Form. Its international curriculum is built around two main entry points: Year 9 at 13, followed by the two-year GCSE course, and the Lower Sixth at 16 for A Levels or BTEC. Students who need a preparatory year before A Levels can take the one-year Pre-A Level programme as full boarders. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at school, every international pupil is assessed in the first week of term so that EAL support can be matched to their level. Pupils with English as a second language work towards the Cambridge First Certificate, and Sixth Form students have lessons aimed at IELTS 7 or above for university entry. Pupils can also sit GCSE and A Level exams in their own language.
Students coming from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. King's College Taunton is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time.
