The Downs Malvern Overview

The Downs Malvern is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school on a 55-acre campus on the western slopes of the Malvern Hills, at Colwall in Worcestershire. It educates children from 6 months to 13 years across the Mini Malvern Nursery, the Pre-Prep and the Prep School (Years 3 to 8). Founded in 1900 as a boys' preparatory school, it merged with Malvern College's prep school in 2008 and is part of the Malvern College Family of Schools.

Pupils follow a broad curriculum with specialist subject teaching from Year 3, French throughout, Latin from Year 6 and the school's own Downs Malvern Baccalaureate. Most leavers continue to Malvern College at 13, and pupils already use the College's swimming pool and theatre. The campus includes a smallholding and a miniature steam railway that pupils help to run.

Boarding at The Downs Malvern

Boarding is offered from Year 3 to Year 8, ages 7 to 13, and around 40 pupils board in some form. Full boarders are mainly international pupils and children from Forces families, while many local families use flexi boarding for one to three nights a week. Spanish and Chinese families are among the international community.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders sleep in shared dormitories of up to eight pupils, which they can personalise, and boys and girls socialise together in two large common rooms. Houseparents lead a boarding team that provides care around the clock, including mealtimes, evenings and weekends. Two resident matrons provide medical care at any hour, with separate overnight rooms for unwell boarders.

Boarding Life

Prep is completed during the school day, leaving evenings for activities and free time. Saturday mornings bring lessons and clubs such as riding, golf and coding, and Sundays offer outings for full boarders, from shopping trips to go-karting.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A qualified SENDCo leads learning support, delivered mainly in class with tailored resources and assistive technology, plus specialist one-to-one teaching where needed. Lessons follow a dyslexia-friendly approach, and the school works with speech and language therapists. Specialist EAL teachers support pupils whose first language is not English, and a weekly staff meeting reviews each pupil's learning and emotional needs.

Every international boarder at The Downs Malvern must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at The Downs Malvern

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

The Downs Malvern accepts international boarders from Year 3 to Year 8, ages 7 to 13, with full boarding available throughout that range. Most international pupils join in September, although the school considers applications at any point in the academic year, so a pupil can start mid-year when a place is available. Most boarders move on to Malvern College for Year 9, giving families a clear route into senior school. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish minimum English levels by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils whose first language is not English are taught by specialist EAL teachers as part of the timetable, and some international families choose the school partly so that their child can strengthen their English before moving on to senior school.

Child Student Visa

Pupils coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. The Downs Malvern is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through Malvern Education Limited, and the school's UKVI compliance officer assists families with the sponsorship process. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

The Downs Malvern requires every international pupil to have a UK-based guardian, and the arrangement must be in place before the pupil's start date. For boarders as young as 7, the guardian looks after the child during exeats, half terms and holidays, coordinates travel to and from Colwall, and keeps in contact with the boarding staff on behalf of parents.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for The Downs Malvern boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.
