It was founded in 1796 through the bequest of John Anderson, who envisaged a place of useful learning, and received its Royal Charter as a university in 1964. The idea of useful learning, with teaching closely linked to industry and practical application, remains central to its identity.
The university occupies a compact city centre campus in Glasgow, within walking distance of the main railway stations and the city's cultural and commercial districts. It has almost 30,000 students from more than 140 countries.
Strathclyde is organised into faculties of engineering, science, humanities and social sciences, and Strathclyde Business School. It is particularly well known for engineering and technology, business and management, and industry partnership, supported by facilities such as the Technology and Innovation Centre. Almost 90 percent of its research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. The university has twice been named University of the Year by Times Higher Education and is also recognised for entrepreneurship and sustainability.
The University of Strathclyde has a large international community, with students from more than 140 countries. The university provides guidance on Student visas and immigration, and continues to support international students during their studies with advice on visa extensions, working in the UK and the cost of living. A network of approved advisers and agents supports applicants in many countries.
The typical English language requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 5.5, for most programmes, while programmes in the Faculty of Science typically require IELTS 6.0 overall, with no band below 5.5. The university's English Language Teaching unit offers pre-sessional academic English and study skills courses for students who need to improve their English before starting an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
Pathway programmes are delivered by the University of Strathclyde International Study Centre, operated by Study Group on the Glasgow campus. UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. The guardian acts on behalf of the parents while the student is a minor, serving as the university's point of contact in an emergency, supporting the student's welfare and providing a trusted adult close by. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with University of Strathclyde is finalised. No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. University of Strathclyde may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
