Adcote School Overview

Adcote School is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 7 to 18 at Little Ness, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire. Founded in 1907, it moved in 1927 to Adcote, a Tudor-style country house designed by the architect Norman Shaw and set in 27 acres of landscaped gardens.

Around 180 pupils attend, from the Junior School in Years 2 to 6 through the Senior School to the Sixth Form. Girls take GCSEs and A Levels, and the Sixth Form also runs a One Year A Level Fast Track Programme. The CLEAR Learning Programme, built on confidence, leadership, engagement, achievement and resilience, runs through every stage.

Boarding at Adcote School

Girls can board from age 8 to 18. Full boarders stay seven nights a week during term, there are no exeat weekends, and boarding continues over half term for those who need it. Weekly, flexi and occasional boarding are also available. About four in five pupils are British, the rest coming from more than ten countries, and an Immersion Programme offers stays of half a term to two terms.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls aged 8 to 16 live in Norman House, where rooms are shared in small groups, while Sixth Formers board in Aston Hall, a purpose-built house with twin en-suite rooms and a more independent, supervised routine. Both houses have common rooms, and boarding is led by Heads of Boarding with teams that include matrons.

Boarding Life

Evenings include supervised prep with academic support, and matrons organise evening and weekend activities, including a weekly film night. Outings take in Chester, the Severn Valley Railway, Warwick Castle and Chirk Castle, with activities ranging from canoeing on the River Severn, archery and dry slope skiing to quad biking and escape rooms.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Girls from Year 9 have a personal tutor, and boarders can also turn to house staff. Learning support includes dyslexia specialists, learning support assistants and individual learning plans, coordinated by the SENCO. A counsellor visits weekly, a full-time medical officer is on site, and Sixth Formers receive individual UCAS guidance, including support for Oxbridge and US applications.

International boarders at Adcote School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Adcote School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Adcote School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Adcote School accepts international girls into its boarding community from age 8. Girls can start at the beginning of the autumn, spring or summer term, so entry is possible in September, January or April. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. New pupils are assessed in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and support is set out in an individual education plan. Weekly provision includes five hours of mainstream English in Years 3 to 9, with evening support where needed, GCSE English with an EAL assistant in Years 10 and 11, and two hours of IELTS preparation in the Sixth Form.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Adcote School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor international boarders for this visa, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Because Adcote stays open over half term and has no exeat weekends, a guardian's role centres on the main holidays, travel and any unplanned absence from school.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Adcote School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

The Immersion Programme lets international girls board at Adcote for anything from half a term to two terms, joining lessons with their own year group, with the option to move on to a longer placement. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Adcote School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Adcote School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Adcote School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Adcote School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
