Concord College Overview

Concord College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for students aged 13 to 18 on a 73-acre campus at Acton Burnell, in the Shropshire countryside south of Shrewsbury. Founded in 1949, the college is based around Acton Burnell Hall, the manor house of Acton Burnell Castle, and is a standalone charitable school with students from more than 40 countries.

Students join in Form 3 (Year 9), take GCSEs in Forms 4 and 5, and then three or four A Levels in the Sixth Form, the largest part of the college, with an optional Extended Project Qualification. Classes are small, and weekly Saturday morning tests are a fixed part of the academic routine.

Boarding at Concord College

Around 85 per cent of students board, more than 400, mostly from overseas. Boarding is full time: there are no compulsory exeat weekends, boarders may stay on site at half term, and Form 5 and Sixth Form students can stay over Easter. The college closes to boarders at Christmas and in the summer.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are 17 residences, each single sex or with separate entrances for boys and girls. Forms 3 and 4 live in Bell (boys) or Taylor's (girls), Form 5 boarders there or in Highfield and Orchard, and Sixth Formers in separate houses ranging from modern purpose-built blocks to a converted village house. Every student has a single study bedroom, with en-suite rooms in some Sixth Form houses. Each residence has a resident Boarding Parent and assistants, with full-time Boarding Assistants in the Lower School houses.

Boarding Life

Boarders eat three meals a day in the dining room, and houses have kitchenettes as well as a large student kitchen for cooking food from home. Evenings and weekends bring clubs, societies and college events such as Lunar New Year celebrations, with regular buses into Shrewsbury and staff-led holiday trips to Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. Wi-Fi is switched off overnight.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A SEN coordinator oversees learning support, and the Good Schools Guide reports help for students with dyslexia or dyspraxia and provision for Asperger's. Nurses staff a medical centre seven days a week, and students can see trained staff listeners or professional counsellors.

Every international boarder at Concord College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Concord College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Concord College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Concord College admits international boarders in Form 3 (Year 9, age 13), Form 4 (Year 10) for the two-year GCSE course, and the Sixth Form at age 16. Form 3 is the smallest year group, while the Sixth Form takes the largest intake. Students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

No fixed IELTS or CEFR minimum is published. Entrance assessments are taken in English, with a separate English paper for non-native speakers, and Sixth Form applicants may also be assessed in English. The Good Schools Guide notes that many students receive support with English. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Concord College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register. Students under 18 on entry need a Child Student visa, and separate applications are made for the GCSE course and for A Levels, with the college issuing the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies around six months before the course starts. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Concord College requires every student who normally lives outside the UK to have a UK-based guardian, including after they turn 18. A relative or friend acting as guardian must be over 25 and not in full-time education, and professional guardians must be accredited by AEGIS or the Boarding Schools' Association. The guardian must be able to house the student whenever the college is closed.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Concord College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the college, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Concord College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Concord College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Concord College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Concord College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
