Packwood School Overview

Packwood School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding preparatory school at Ruyton XI Towns, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire, for pupils aged 4 to 13. Founded in 1892 and long known as Packwood Haugh, it is part of the Shrewsbury Family of Schools, which it joined in 2019. The rural campus has sports pitches, a sports hall, a swimming pool, a theatre and a golf course.

Pupils follow a broad prep school curriculum, with classes capped at 18, and leave at 13 for senior schools through Common Entrance and scholarships. Pupils who join in Year 7 on the Shrewsbury Pathway are guaranteed a place at Shrewsbury School for Year 9.

Boarding at Packwood School

Most pupils board at some point, whether full time, a few nights a week or occasionally, and there are around 60 full boarders, including pupils from overseas. Full boarders stay in school for the whole term apart from half term and exeat weekends. New boarders can start with transitional boarding for their first three terms, going home after Saturday games, and occasional nights can also be booked.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys board on the upper floors of the main school building, with bedrooms arranged by year group across four landings. Girls board in Park House, a purpose-built house in the grounds, with bedrooms grouped by age. Each house is led by Houseparents, supported by matrons, boarding tutors and graduate assistants.

Boarding Life

After supper, younger boarders take part in activities while older boarders have supervised study or clubs. Lights out runs from 8.15pm for the youngest to 9.30pm for Year 8. Saturdays bring morning school, afternoon sport and a film night, and Sunday activities range from campfire building and pottery to trips to Chester Zoo and go-karting.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department has its own building and qualified teachers who usually teach pupils one to one, with speech and language therapy available, and pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD are among those supported. Form Tutors are the main link with home, and each new overseas pupil is paired with a boarder from the same year to help them settle in.

Every international boarder at Packwood School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Packwood School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Packwood School welcomes overseas boarders from age 7 to the end of Year 8. Year 7 suits families planning a route to Shrewsbury School, as Year 7 joiners on the Shrewsbury Pathway are guaranteed a place there for Year 9. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Packwood does not publish a minimum English level but recommends that overseas pupils have at least some English. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Most overseas pupils start with specialist EAL lessons, one to one or in small groups in place of Latin or French, with up to five hours of individual support a week.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Packwood School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Packwood requires every international pupil to have a UK guardian who is a British citizen or settled in the UK. The guardian provides a home during exeats, coach weekends and holidays when the pupil cannot travel home, and arranges any transport needed.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Packwood School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Each term, Packwood welcomes short-stay pupils who live as full boarders, follow the full curriculum alongside British pupils and build their English through daily immersion. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Packwood School's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Packwood School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Packwood School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Packwood School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
