Learn More →Shrewsbury School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 13 to 18, set on a 110-acre campus above the River Severn, overlooking the town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire. Founded by Royal Charter of Edward VI in 1552, it has been fully co-educational since 2014. The school is part of the Shrewsbury Family of Schools, which includes the Packwood, Terra Nova and Prestfelde prep schools.
Third Formers follow the broad Origin Curriculum, including Latin, the three sciences and two further languages. Most pupils then take 8 to 10 GCSEs and IGCSEs. Sixth Formers choose from 25 A Level subjects, taking at least three alongside a fourth A Level, the Extended Project Qualification or a course in employability and leadership skills.
Shrewsbury is a full boarding school with more than 600 boarders, around three quarters of its roughly 840 pupils, and boarding runs seven days a week. Terms are broken by half terms and coach weekends, when international boarders stay with their guardians.
There are 12 houses, seven for boys and five for girls, each home to both boarders and day pupils. The newest, Queen's, opened in 2023 as the fifth girls' house, with room for up to 70 pupils. Every house has a Housemaster or Housemistress, an assistant, a resident Matron and at least eight House Tutors, and each pupil also has a personal tutor responsible for their welfare. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
Saturday lessons are followed by sports fixtures and activities. Each house plans cultural, social and recreational outings for its year groups through the year, and the school owns a farmhouse in Snowdonia used at weekends for expeditions and house trips.
The Learning Support Department, with six specialist staff, gives pupils with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties weekly tuition outside the timetable, guided by an Individual Learning Plan, and the school is CReSTeD registered for dyslexia. A non-examined Guided Study course can replace one GCSE option for pupils who need extra support. The Health Centre is staffed 24 hours a day, and Personal and Social Development lessons and tutorials support wellbeing.

Shrewsbury School admits international boarders at three points: the Third Form at 13+ (Year 9), the Fourth Form at 14+ (Year 10) and the Sixth Form at 16+ (Year 12). All entry is in September, and pupils join from a wide range of countries. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Shrewsbury School does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores. Applicants with English as an additional language must show a standard of English suited to their course. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. EAL support is usually a weekly individual or small group lesson on top of curriculum English. In the Third Form, EAL can be taken in place of Latin.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Shrewsbury School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once the guardianship form has been received. Pupils moving from GCSE to the Sixth Form need a new visa before the Lower Sixth. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Shrewsbury School requires every international pupil to have a UK guardian who is over 25, not in full-time education, English speaking and living in a permanent or semi-permanent UK home, ideally within about two hours' travel of the school. The guardian signs a Guardianship Agreement with the parents, acts as a 24-hour emergency contact, and provides a home during exeats, coach weekends and holidays. Hotels and university halls are not accepted, and the school favours reputable, ideally accredited, guardianship agencies.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Shrewsbury School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Shrewsbury School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
