Learn More →Bath Academy is an independent, co-educational sixth form college in the centre of Bath, Somerset, teaching students from age 14 on GCSE, A Level and university preparation courses. The college is based in two city-centre buildings, on Queen Square and nearby Chapel Row, a few minutes' walk apart. It is a member of the Council for Independent Education (CIFE) and is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
Teaching is built around very small groups: no academic class has more than eight students, and the average is three. GCSE students follow a two-year course from age 14 or an intensive one-year course from 15, and A Level students choose a two-year course, an 18-month course starting in January, or a one-year course for retakes. Foundation programmes prepare older students for university.
Bath Academy offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request. Students aged 14 and over can live in the college residence on a full-board basis during term time, and homestay with local families is available from 16. International students on the Academic Term Abroad Programme can also board for one or two terms.
The residence, Oxford House, is around ten minutes' walk from the college and the city centre. It has single and shared rooms, allocated in order of booking, and staff supervise the house 24 hours a day. An in-house chef prepares home-cooked meals. The residence is open during term dates only.
The social programme is planned month by month, with themed parties, film and quiz nights, charity events, outdoor activities and weekly student clubs. Monthly day trips visit cities such as Bristol, Oxford, Cardiff and London, residence students have social activities at weekends, and the year ends with a Summer Ball in May.
Every student meets a personal tutor each week to review progress and set goals, which are checked each half term. English and subject teachers work closely together for international students, and a Study Centre runs weekly supervised assessments. Students can speak to tutors, teachers, residence staff or an independent listener, and a welfare officer supports students day to day.
Every international boarder at Bath Academy must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Bath Academy website.
Bath Academy accepts international students from age 14, joining two-year GCSE courses at 14, intensive one-year GCSE courses from 15, A Level courses from 16 or foundation programmes for older students. The main intake is September, with a January start for the 18-month A Level course and the Academic Term Abroad Programme. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
International students joining GCSE courses need an IELTS score of at least 5.0, with no less than 4.5 in any skill. For other courses, English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required during placement. Enrolled students then build academic writing, speaking and IELTS skills through the Academic English Development programme.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a visa. Bath Academy is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and also sponsors Student visas for those aged 18 and over. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Bath Academy requires international students to have a parent or guardian who is resident in the UK. A close relative such as a grandparent, aunt, uncle or adult sibling can take on the role, and the college points families to guardianship organisations to find a suitable person.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Bath Academy boarders. Whenever your child cannot stay at Bath Academy, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Bath Academy is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Bath Academy may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
