Prior Park College Overview

Prior Park College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18, set in 57 acres above Bath, Somerset, around 15 minutes' walk from the city centre. Founded in 1830 by Bishop Baines, it is a Christian school in the Catholic tradition. The college is part of Prior Park Schools, run by the Prior Park Educational Trust, alongside The Paragon prep school in Bath and Prior Park Gibraltar.

Around 560 pupils study at the college, which has main entry points at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Pupils take GCSEs, then choose from around 28 A Level subjects, BTEC Level 3 Diplomas in Business and in Sport and Exercise Science, and the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Prior Park College

Around 140 boarders from approximately 25 countries live on site, most of them international full boarders, and weekly and flexi boarding are also offered. There are no exeat weekends, and the houses stay open at half term for students who need to remain. International students can also join for one to three terms on the Short Stay programme.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls board in St Mary's, home to around 70 girls in the Priory, a Grade II listed building from 1740 beside the Prior Park Landscape Garden. Boys board in St Paul's, which houses around 80 and has common rooms, prep rooms and a kitchen. Each house has a live-in House Parent and residential tutors. Years 7 and 8 have their own junior areas, younger pupils share rooms, and many Sixth Formers have single study bedrooms.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings include supervised prep, a house meeting and night prayers, with set bedtimes by year group. The Saturday Active programme offers more than 25 options each term, and Sunday trips range from Stonehenge and Longleat Safari Park to the seaside and Premiership football.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Development Programme combines differentiated classroom teaching with small group or one-to-one sessions from specialist teachers. The Good Schools Guide notes that pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism are welcomed. A nurse-led Health and Wellbeing Centre includes a counsellor and a Mental Health and Wellbeing Assistant.

English Language Requirements

No minimum CEFR or IELTS levels are published. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. EAL lessons are included in the timetable for pupils joining from Year 7, pupils in Years 9 to 11 can prepare for Cambridge English qualifications and IGCSE English as a Second Language, and Sixth Formers can prepare for IELTS.

Child Student Visa

Students from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Prior Park College can sponsor this visa through the Prior Park Educational Trust, a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and an external compliance adviser guides parents through the process. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Prior Park College requires a guardian for every student whose parents do not live permanently in the UK. The guardian must be AEGIS or BSA accredited, or a close family member over 25, should ideally live within an hour of the school, and must be a British citizen or hold settled status.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Prior Park College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

International students joining Years 7 to 12 for less than a year board at the college for one, two or three terms, following a timetable matched to their year group and English level. They work towards the Prior Park Short Stay Award and International Diploma at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Prior Park College's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Prior Park College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Prior Park College is finalised. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Prior Park College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
