Learn More →Monkton Combe School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school near Bath, Somerset, for pupils aged 2 to 18. The Prep School, for ages 2 to 13, is at Combe Down, and the Senior School, for ages 13 to 18, sits in a rural valley at Monkton Combe, about two miles from the city. Founded in 1868 by the local vicar to educate the sons of Christian missionaries, the school keeps a Christian ethos.
Senior pupils take GCSEs in Years 9 to 11 and A Levels in the Sixth Form, where the Extended Project Qualification is also offered. Senior pupils have Saturday morning lessons, and the school has more than 600 pupils, around 230 of them boarders.
Boarding runs from Year 3 to the Upper Sixth, with full boarding alongside weekly and flexi options; most senior boarders are full boarders. Around a sixth of pupils are international, from 24 countries, and some join for a year to concentrate on their English. Prospective boarders can attend an overnight boarding taster.
Prep boarders live in Hatton House, where new boarders are given a buddy. The Senior School has six houses, three for girls (Clarendon, Grange and Nutfield) and three for boys (Eddystone, Farm and School House), each home to boarders and day pupils and run by a houseparent couple. Room types are not published, and room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
Senior boarders have supervised prep each evening, and houses hold in-house nights twice a week. Saturday evenings bring band nights, house dinners and international cookery evenings, while Sundays offer a late brunch, minibuses to local churches and into Bath, and larger trips every few weeks. Hatton stays full at weekends, with Sunday outings to places such as Longleat, Blenheim Palace and London.
Three qualified learning support teachers give weekly individual sessions to senior pupils with needs such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, teach learning strategies and manage exam access arrangements, and the school is registered with CReSTeD for dyslexia. All Year 10 pupils are screened. Prep pupils receive one-to-one or paired support, and sixth formers have their own Sixth Form Centre.

Applicants whose first language is not English complete an English language assessment as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Specialist language teachers provide individual or small-group EAL lessons, beginning with an assessment of reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar on arrival. Students leave the EAL programme once they reach the required level of English.

Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
