Learn More →Kingswood School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Bath, Somerset, for pupils aged nine months to 18 years, with around 900 pupils. Founded in 1748 by John Wesley, it has occupied a 120-acre site on Lansdown, on the northern edge of the city, since 1851, with its nursery and prep school on the same campus.
Boarding begins in Year 7. Pupils take GCSEs, then choose A Levels from more than 20 subjects, BTEC Sport and the Extended Project Qualification in a Sixth Form of more than 270 students.
Around 180 boarders from more than 20 countries live at Kingswood, with British pupils making up just over half and others from countries such as Spain, France, Germany, Ukraine, Japan, Hong Kong and Nigeria. More than three quarters are full boarders, and weekly and flexi boarding are also offered. The school has no exeat weekends, so full boarders remain on campus throughout each term.
Years 7 and 8 board in Beaconfield, a refurbished junior house for around 30 pupils, with boys and girls on separate floors and bedrooms for two to five. From Year 9, pupils join a senior house: Middle, with just over 40 boys; Summerhill, with around 45 girls; Fonthill, the original girls' house; and Hall, in a purpose-built building since 2014. Senior rooms range from quads to singles, some en-suite, and house parents lead each house with a boarding team.
There is no Saturday school, and weekends combine rest with yoga, swimming, floodlit tennis and hockey, open music and art rooms, and trips to Longleat, Westonbirt Arboretum, Bath Rugby matches and the theatre. Houses run baking competitions and games evenings, and more than 100 co-curricular activities run across the week.
All new pupils are screened for learning difficulties, and specialist teachers give one-to-one sessions during private study periods, guided by Pupil Profiles reviewed with families. Access arrangements are assessed in school, and a Learning Support Centre offers a quiet space for study. Sixth formers each have a shared study room in the Dixon Sixth Form Centre, with dedicated programmes for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary applications.

Kingswood School accepts international boarders from Year 7, with entry into Years 7 to 10 and into the Sixth Form at Year 12, and the main scholarship entry points at Years 7, 9 and 12. Most students join in September, and applications for other points in the year are considered where places are available. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Kingswood does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR levels. International applicants complete an English as an Additional Language paper as part of their assessment, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Kingswood School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies that supports the visa, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Kingswood requires every pupil whose parents live overseas to have an adult guardian in the UK, and guardian details must be confirmed before the school issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. The guardian takes responsibility for travel, accommodation during holidays and acting on the family's behalf in an emergency, and the school sets out its expectations in a separate guardianship policy.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Kingswood School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms and holidays, which matters at a school where full boarders stay on campus every weekend of term. Parents gain a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK who follows their child's progress and wellbeing throughout the year.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Kingswood School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
