Bradfield College Overview

Bradfield College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 13 to 18, set on a 285-acre campus in the village of Bradfield, Berkshire, about 40 minutes from Heathrow. Founded in 1850, the College has more than 800 pupils and is part of the Bradfield Group, which also includes St Andrew's, a nearby prep school.

Year 9 pupils begin in Faulkner's, a house with its own curriculum that eases the move from prep school. GCSEs follow in Years 10 and 11, and sixth formers choose between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, alongside the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Bradfield College

Pupils come from more than 20 nationalities. Most are weekly boarders who stay from Monday until after Saturday sport, while a smaller group of full boarders, many from overseas, remain at school at weekends. Day boarding and a newer day option are also offered.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Faulkner's houses the whole of Year 9, with separate boys' and girls' common rooms and en-suite dormitories. From Year 10, pupils join one of 11 single-sex senior houses, four for girls and seven for boys, where many study bedrooms are en-suite and shared by two or three pupils, and sixth formers usually have single or double rooms. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a Matron and tutors.

Boarding Life

A pupil Weekend Committee helps plan the full boarders' programme, from Saturday house events and a Sixth Form social club to a London trip each term, seasonal outings, paintballing and go-karting. The gym, pool and golf course stay open, and house staff are on duty throughout the weekend.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Support and Study Skills Department helps pupils with specific learning difficulties through study skills groups, individual lessons from Year 10 and exam access arrangements. An on-site Talking Therapies team of counsellors, psychologists and CBT therapists supports wellbeing, alongside weekly wellbeing lessons in Years 9 to 11.

International boarders at Bradfield College are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Bradfield College admits international boarders at 13+ (Year 9), 14+ (Year 10), 15+ (Year 11) and 16+ (Year 12), when pupils choose between A Levels and the IB Diploma. Most students join in September, and entry at other points is considered individually. International pupils form a relatively small share of the roll, so boarders from overseas live and study in a predominantly English-speaking community. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Every applicant must show written and spoken English appropriate to the year of entry, and candidates with English as an additional language sit an English placement test. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Non-native speakers are assessed again on arrival to shape their EAL teaching. In Years 10 and 11, EAL can be studied to IGCSE in place of a second modern foreign language, and A Level pupils who need support have two EAL lessons a week leading to IELTS. IB pupils receive individual support, and pupils are encouraged to take qualifications in their native language where available.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Bradfield College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and its international admissions team offers guidance on visa processes, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
