The Oratory School Overview

The Oratory School is an independent Catholic, co-educational day and boarding school in Woodcote, South Oxfordshire, for pupils aged 11 to 18, set on a 100-acre site between Reading and Henley-on-Thames. Founded in 1859 by Saint John Henry Newman in Birmingham, it moved to the Reading area in 1923, later settled at Woodcote and first admitted girls in 2020. The nearby Oratory Prep School shares its history but is a separate school.

Pupils take GCSEs, with Religious Studies compulsory, then A Levels and the Extended Project Qualification in the Sixth Form. Latin, Ancient Greek and Computer Science are offered, and Catholic worship in the school's two chapels is central to community life.

Boarding at The Oratory School

Families can choose full boarding, weekly boarding or flexi boarding of one to four nights. Overseas boarders make up around one in seven pupils and come from more than 20 countries, including Mexico, Spain, China, Hong Kong, Nigeria and South Korea. The school also arranges international stays of half a term, one term or two terms.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Years 7 and 8 start in St Philip, a small junior house for boys and girls, then move to a senior house for the rest of their time at school. Senior boys board in Norris or FitzAlan, and girls from Year 9 to the Upper Sixth live in Wootten. Each house has resident house staff, including a Housemother, and most teachers live on site. The larger dormitories have bunk beds, and houses have common rooms and kitchens.

Boarding Life

Most prep is completed at school, and Monday evenings bring the Rose Bowl, a weekly inter-house competition. Weekends are as busy as weekdays: Saturdays combine sports fixtures with afternoon outings, while Sundays include Mass, activities and trips. A boarding house stays open over exeat weekends.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every pupil has a tutor for academic and pastoral care, supported by a school counsellor and a resident Chaplain who looks after pupils of every faith. The Curriculum Support department, led by a full-time SENCo, helps pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, autism and speech and language needs, with some specialist sessions at extra cost. Sixth Formers have their own centre and one-to-one guidance on university applications.

Every international boarder at The Oratory School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at The Oratory School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official The Oratory School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

The Oratory School admits international boarders at 11+, 13+ and 16+, and most join in September. Its international programme also accepts students into Years 7 to 13 at the start of the autumn, spring or summer term, for one term, two terms or a full academic year. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish a minimum CEFR or IELTS score. Pupils should arrive with at least basic spoken and written English, which is assessed during the application, and Sixth Form entry normally requires grade 4 in GCSE or IGCSE English. One-to-one EAL lessons are offered to every international pupil whose first language is not English, with preparation for IELTS and second-language IGCSE English.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. The Oratory School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place has been accepted, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

The Oratory School requires every pupil whose parents live overseas to have a UK resident guardian, who acts for the parents in the UK and must be reachable in an emergency. The school points families towards guardians accredited by AEGIS.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for The Oratory School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

The international programme welcomes boarders aged 11 to 18 for one or two terms, with full integration into lessons and co-curricular life and a full weekend boarding programme. Bespoke half-term stays and two-week group immersions with a teacher are also arranged. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms The Oratory School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at The Oratory School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with The Oratory School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. The Oratory School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
