Learn More →Pangbourne College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school just south-west of the village of Pangbourne in West Berkshire, for pupils aged 11 to 18. Founded in 1917 as The Nautical College, Pangbourne, to train officers for the Merchant Navy, it took its present name in 1969 and has been co-educational since 1996. The college is part of Mill Hill Education Group, a federated educational charity, and keeps its own name and identity. Naval traditions, including a uniform worn daily and ceremonial parades, remain part of college life.
The 230-acre campus lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about ten minutes from the M4. Years 7 and 8 form the Junior House, followed by GCSE courses in Years 9 to 11. Sixth Form students choose from 22 A Level and BTEC options alongside the Extended Project Qualification, in classes of no more than 14.
Around 40 per cent of pupils board, and international students come from more than 12 countries. Families can choose full boarding, seven nights a week; weekly boarding from Sunday or Monday to Saturday; part boarding of four nights a week; or occasional ad hoc nights.
Boarders live in three boarding houses: St George for girls, and Port Jackson and Adelaide for boys, each led by a Head of House, with boarding staff on hand at all times. Every pupil also belongs to one of the college's Divisions, which form the pastoral house structure.
Evenings combine prep with activities such as spin classes, gym sessions, comedy nights and house cooking competitions, and Saturdays bring sports fixtures for Year 9 and above. Weekend trips are a regular feature, from paintballing, ice skating and go-karting to Thorpe Park and the Winchester Christmas Market.
The Learning Support department screens every pupil on entry and teaches one-to-one lessons, with particular expertise in dyslexia and ADHD, and a specialist EAL department supports pupils whose first language is not English. Heads of House and Division lead pastoral care, supported by counselling, the Girls on Board programme and Lower Sixth peer mentors, and Sixth Formers have their own centre with a dedicated pastoral team.

British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Pangbourne does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores. All overseas applicants take English tests before entry, and pupils are tested again on arrival. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Depending on their language skills, pupils may be asked to take EAL lessons at additional cost, taught by specialist teachers in groups or individually and covering reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, grammar and cultural awareness.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Pangbourne College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register. The college contacts families who need sponsorship in the months before entry and prepares the documents for the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Pangbourne College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
