Learn More →Dulwich College is an independent day and boarding school for boys in Dulwich, south London, on a 70-acre campus around 12 minutes by train from central London. Founded in 1619 by the actor Edward Alleyn, the College educates boys from the Junior School through the Lower and Middle Schools to the Upper School, its Sixth Form.
Boarding runs from Year 7 to Year 13. Boys take GCSEs and IGCSEs in the Middle School and A Levels in the Upper School.
Around 130 boys board, from more than 20 nationalities as well as from London and elsewhere in the UK. Full, weekly and occasional boarding are available.
There are four boarding houses. Old Blew and The Orchard, beside the campus and joined by a shared building, are home to around 55 boys, with younger boarders in The Orchard and older boys in Old Blew. Ivyholme and Blew House each take about 40 boys in Years 12 and 13, in en-suite single study bedrooms. Younger boys share rooms of two to five, depending on age and room size. Each house has a resident Housemaster, resident and visiting tutors and a Matron.
Evenings start with a house meeting, then free time and supervised prep of 75 minutes for younger boys and two hours for the Upper School, with a member of staff always on duty. Visiting speakers cover topics such as sleep and managing stress. There are no weekend lessons: Saturdays often bring sports fixtures, houses run trips and competitions, and boarders use the sports centre. Years 7 to 11 have four exeat weekends a year when houses close; Years 12 and 13 have none.
A Learning Support Department helps boys who need extra support with the academic programme, and the EAL department teaches non-native speakers in small groups and one to one. The Medical Centre is staffed by nurses 24 hours a day, and a counsellor offers confidential appointments.
Every international boarder at Dulwich College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Dulwich College website.
Dulwich College admits international boarders at the main entry points of Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12, and boys joining at 11 can board throughout their time at the College. Most students start in September, and places in other year groups are considered individually when they arise. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
An IELTS certificate is not required at the point of application, because all candidates are assessed in English as part of the entrance process. Boys entering the Upper School are expected to hold an IELTS qualification by the time they arrive, although the College does not publish a minimum score. Once enrolled, pupils who need help with English are supported by the EAL department in small groups and individual lessons, with the focus on the academic English needed for GCSE and A Level courses. British Guardianship confirms the expected level for each year of entry.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Dulwich College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor international boarders, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Dulwich College requires every boy whose parents live overseas to have a UK-based guardian, and the rule continues to apply after a student turns 18. The guardian must be at least 25 years old and live close enough to the College to carry out the role. Boarders go home or stay with their guardian during the holidays, and all houses close for the October and February half terms and, for younger boys, on exeat weekends, so the guardian's support is needed several times each term.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Dulwich College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the College, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Dulwich College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Dulwich College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Dulwich College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
