North London Grammar School Overview

North London Grammar School is an independent, co-educational day school for pupils aged 4 to 18, with boarding for boys, based on a single campus on Colindeep Lane in Hendon, in the London Borough of Barnet. Founded in 2006 as Wisdom School in Tottenham, it later moved to its present campus of around 50,000 square feet, a former police training centre.

The Senior School follows the National Curriculum and leads to GCSEs. In place of a traditional A Level sixth form, students aged 16 to 18 can take a one-year University Foundation Programme accredited by OCN London, with pathways in business and finance, engineering and computing, humanities and social sciences, and art and design.

Boarding at North London Grammar School

Boarding is for boys from mixed year groups in the Senior School, who come from across the UK and overseas. Boarders stay at school over the weekend, and the Independent Schools Council lists full boarding alongside weekly and flexible options. North London Grammar School offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

The boarding house occupies the fourth floor of the main school building. It has five bedrooms, each with five or six single beds and a bedside drawer and wardrobe for every boarder, plus a study room, a kitchen, a common area, a laundry and a medical room. A team of trained supervisors and mentors, including resident house staff, provides pastoral care around the clock.

Boarding Life

Weekdays run from breakfast at 7.30am through lessons until 4pm, free time, a reading session and dinner, then supervised prep from 7pm until just after 9pm before free time and lights out. Saturday mornings are given to activities, and in the afternoon boys go out in groups on excursions around London. Sundays are more flexible, with brunch, scheduled study sessions to review the week, optional trips and supervised cycling. Fresh meals include vegetarian, kosher and halal options.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every pupil's reading and spelling is assessed on entry, and a SENCo coordinates additional help, which can include literacy intervention, one-to-one and small-group support, in-class support, study skills, mentoring and counselling. Boarders can also speak in confidence to an independent listener.

International boarders at North London Grammar School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

North London Grammar School accepts international boys as boarders in the Senior School, with boarding listed from age 12, and international students follow the same lessons as local pupils. Families joining in Year 9 or Year 10 choose GCSE options on entry. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish a minimum English level for entry to the Senior School. International students study the full curriculum alongside local pupils, and teaching offers support or extra challenge according to each student's needs. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. North London Grammar School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies to international students who need this visa once their place is confirmed, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Families of boarders complete a guardianship agreement with the school. Parents who cannot attend school meetings or respond to calls about their son themselves must appoint a guardian in the UK to act for them. The school arranges airport transport only at the start of a boarder's first year, so travel in later years is organised by the family or guardian.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for North London Grammar School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents one reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.
