Headington School Oxford Overview

Headington School Oxford is an independent day and boarding school in Headington, about a mile from central Oxford, for pupils aged 3 to 18. Girls aged 11 to 18 attend the Senior School and Sixth Form on a 23-acre site, while the co-educational Nursery and Prep School occupies the adjacent site of the former Rye St Antony School. Headington dates from 1915, and in 2024 it merged with Rye St Antony to form a single all-through school, registered as Headington Rye Oxford.

Boarding is for girls from Year 7 to Year 13. Girls usually take nine GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers around 30 A Level subjects alongside the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Headington School Oxford

More than 200 girls board across five houses, over 150 of them full boarders who stay through the week and at weekends. Around three quarters of full boarders have families overseas, and the school represents around 30 nationalities. Families can also choose weekly boarding, a flexible pattern of up to three nights a week or occasional stays, and a short-stay option lets girls joining Years 7 to 9 board for at least one term.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Davenport, a Victorian family home, houses girls in Years 7 to 9 in rooms of two to seven beds, with prep rooms and a large garden. Older girls move to Hillstow or Napier, sharing double or four-bed rooms, with three resident staff in each house. Sixth Formers live in Celia Marsh and MacGregor, above the Sixth Form Centre, in single and double study bedrooms. Each house has a Housemistress, an assistant, a matron and graduate boarding assistants.

Boarding Life

Boarding tutors help with homework in the evenings, boarders can use the gym and pool, and themed house dinners and treat nights run through the term. Boarders' events and activities take place after school and at weekends, with Oxford's museums, galleries and concerts close by.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Pupils are screened on entry, and the Learning Development team provides exam access arrangements, weekly one-to-one support for younger pupils and drop-in sessions for older ones, covering needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism. A wellbeing hub offers a quiet space for pupils who need time out.
