Learn More →Shebbear College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the village of Shebbear, near Beaworthy in north Devon, for girls and boys aged 4 to 18. Its 85-acre rural campus lies within reach of Dartmoor, Exmoor and the north Cornwall coast, with Bideford, Bude and Barnstaple the nearest towns. Founded in 1841 by the Bible Christians, who had opened Prospect College on the site in 1829, the school keeps its Methodist heritage and is part of Inspired Learning Group, a family of independent schools and nurseries across England.
Boarding is available from age 8. Pupils typically take around nine GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels alongside BTEC courses.
Shebbear College offers full, weekly and flexi boarding for pupils aged 8 to 18, and flexi boarders usually commit to set nights each week. The boarding community is small, numbering a few dozen pupils, and around two thirds of boarders come from overseas, including students from France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Japan and Hong Kong. At the start and end of term, staff meet international pupils at London Heathrow and travel with them by private coach.
Boarders live in Pollard, a refurbished co-educational boarding house. Younger boarders share bedrooms, while older students and Sixth Formers can have single rooms, and accessible rooms are available. The house has a common room, a modern kitchen and a dining room, and the boarding team runs it in a family-style way.
After lessons, boarders change out of uniform and join an hour of enrichment in music, drama, sport or art before tea. Pupils from Year 7 upwards then complete an hour of evening prep, while younger boarders finish their work earlier. Saturdays bring sports fixtures and house competitions, and weekend outings include surfing and watersports, theatre visits, theme parks, climbing and castles.
SEND-trained teachers and teaching assistants provide one-to-one, small group and in-class support focused on literacy, numeracy and study skills, covering needs including dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism. All pupils are assessed on arrival, and Sixth Form students have their own centre.

Shebbear College does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils who need extra help receive EAL tuition in small classes set by ability, and specialist teachers run courses leading to IELTS and the Cambridge KET and PET exams.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Shebbear College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through Inspired Learning Group, and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place is accepted, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Boarders spend half terms and holidays at home or with a guardian. Shebbear College asks that the guardian is a relative or family friend living permanently in the UK, aged over 25 and preferably within reasonable reach of the school, or a guardianship organisation.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Shebbear College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Shebbear College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Shebbear College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
