Rookwood School Overview

Rookwood School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school on Weyhill Road in Andover, Hampshire, educating boys and girls from nursery age through to GCSE. The Nursery, the Prep School from Reception and the Senior School for Years 7 to 11 share one site, with the boarding houses a short walk away. Rookwood is part of Inspired Learning Group, a family of independent schools and nurseries across England.

Boarding is offered for pupils aged 7 to 16. Pupils follow a broad prep curriculum before GCSE courses in the senior years, and the school's Sixth Form Pathways allow them to continue at a sixth form within the group, where full boarding is available, or to move to other sixth form options.

Boarding at Rookwood School

Rookwood runs a small boarding community of up to 28 boarders. Families can choose full, weekly, flexi or occasional boarding, with packages that can change from term to term. International students board as full boarders, and the school also hosts visiting groups for immersion stays.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in two neighbouring, refurbished houses about five minutes' walk from the main school: Beechwood for girls and Oakwood for boys. Pupils sleep in rooms for two or three, and downstairs there is a games room, a computer room, sitting and dining rooms, a kitchen and a large shared garden. Boarding staff live in the houses and also hold roles in the school, which helps them support boarders' studies.

Boarding Life

Boarders have breakfast in the house before walking to school, and return after lessons, clubs and prep for a home-cooked meal eaten together. Evening activities vary through the week, from a house meeting where boarders suggest ideas and menu choices to themed games, film nights and sports hall sessions. Full boarders have an organised activity or trip on Saturdays, with past outings including a visit to Buckingham Palace.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every new pupil is assessed before joining to identify strengths and areas for development. Pupils with identified needs may follow an Individual Education Plan and are supported by specialist teachers and Learning Support Assistants, while a dedicated SEN team manages transitions such as the move into Year 7.

Every international boarder at Rookwood School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Rookwood School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Rookwood School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Rookwood School welcomes international boarders aged 7 to 16, and enrols them as full boarders. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually, and the school recommends that overseas pupils stay for at least half a term. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Rookwood does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The school welcomes pupils with English as an additional language.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Rookwood School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through Inspired Learning Group, and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies to students taking up a place. The school recommends an immigration adviser that works in partnership with the group, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Rookwood School requires overseas pupils to have a guardian in the UK who can care for the student in an emergency or illness and during holidays. The school prefers a regulated guardianship agency to a relative, so that suitability can be checked.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Rookwood School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Rookwood hosts immersion stays of a week or longer for groups of students aged 8 to 16. Visiting students board in the school's houses, join lessons alongside British pupils, take part in evening and weekend activities and visit places such as Stonehenge and Oxford. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Rookwood School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Rookwood School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Rookwood School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Rookwood School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
