Learn More →Denstone College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 4 to 18, set in the village of Denstone near Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, close to the Derbyshire border. Founded in 1868 by Nathaniel Woodard, the college is part of Woodard Schools, a national family of independent schools, and educates more than 600 pupils across its Pre-Prep, Prep, Senior School and Sixth Form.
Pupils work towards GCSEs, then choose three or four subjects from 21 A Level options in the Lower Sixth, usually continuing with three. The Extended Project Qualification and a leadership and life skills programme complement A Level study.
More than 150 pupils board, from age 7 through to the Upper Sixth, and international students live at the college as full boarders. Families can also choose weekly, flexi or occasional boarding, and the college accepts international students for one or two terms as well as for a full year or longer. Boarders come from across Europe and further afield, including Germany, Spain, China and Hong Kong.
There are four boarding houses. Hartley House is home to the youngest boarders, aged 7 to 13, with separate accommodation for boys and girls. South House takes boys from the Third to Fifth Forms, where younger pupils sleep in dormitories and older boys share in twos or threes. Girls from the Third Form to the Upper Sixth board in Moss Moor, and Sixth Form boys live in North House, which has en-suite rooms and upstairs study areas. Each house has a Housemaster or Housemistress, tutors and a matron.
After supper and a house meeting, boarders complete supervised prep from 7pm in their rooms or the library, with staff on hand, before evening activities such as climbing and baking. Every weekend includes a trip on both Saturday and Sunday, and boarders can choose to join or relax in house.
The Learning Support Department helps with literacy, maths and study skills, and the college has teachers who specialise in dyslexia. Pastoral care brings together tutors, house staff, a Wellbeing Centre, a school doctor, a counsellor and the chaplain.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
