Learn More →Worksop College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 2 to 18, run across two sites in north Nottinghamshire. The Senior School and Sixth Form occupy a 330-acre estate on the edge of Sherwood Forest, bordering the National Trust's Clumber Park, while the Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep School are based at Ranby House, about five miles away near Retford. Founded by Canon Nathaniel Woodard and opened in 1895, the college is part of Woodard Schools, a group of Anglican independent schools, and merged with Ranby House in 2010.
Senior pupils take GCSEs before moving on to A Levels, BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification in the Sixth Form. Sheffield and Lincoln are each about 40 minutes away by car.
Boarding is available from age 7, and families can choose full boarding, weekly boarding or flexi boarding. Full boarding runs seven days a week with a weekend programme. The school also has a dedicated junior boarding house on the senior site for younger boarders. Boarders come from many countries, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany and Bulgaria.
Year 7 pupils are based in Portland, the junior house, which also provides boarding for the year group. From Year 8, pupils join a senior house, and overnight boarding is centred in Gibbs for girls and Mason for boys. Bedrooms are usually shared by two to four pupils, with smaller rooms for older students, and Houseparents and their assistants live on site.
Older boarders have late-night study, exam clinics and one-to-one teacher support, and Wednesday is House Night. At weekends, boarders go on trips to the Peak District, Sheffield, Lincoln, Nottingham and London, or use the pool, gym and 18-hole golf course. Boarders who stay in school over exeat weekends are looked after in Mason, with outings planned for them.
Every pupil has a Houseparent, an Assistant Houseparent and a tutor, with weekly check-ins. A small Learning Support team, mainly supporting pupils with dyslexia, provides in-class help and one-to-one sessions, and the Willow Hub offers wellbeing support from mental health practitioners. Nurses staff the Health Care Centre 24 hours a day.

Worksop College accepts international boarders from Year 3, at age 7, through to the Upper Sixth, with younger pupils joining the Prep School at Ranby House and older students entering the Senior School or Sixth Form. Pupils can start at the beginning of the academic year in September or join during the year. The college is non-academically selective, and international pupils live in mixed houses alongside British boarders and day pupils. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Worksop College does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels for each year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Overseas pupils who need extra support receive two English as an Additional Language lessons a week as part of their fees, taught by a qualified specialist and usually in place of French. The aim is to bring each student's English to the level needed for a degree course at a British university.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Worksop College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through Woodard Schools (Nottinghamshire) Limited, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
The college keeps a boarding house open for pupils who stay in over exeat weekends, but international students still need support at half terms, holidays and other times when they cannot be in school. UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Worksop College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
