Queen Mary's School Overview

Queen Mary's School is an independent day and boarding school for girls at Baldersby Park, Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, just off the A1 between Ripon and Thirsk. It educates girls from 3 to 16 across a nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep School and Senior School on one parkland estate, centred on a country house around 300 years old. The school has a Church of England ethos and is part of Woodard Schools, a national group of independent schools owned by the Woodard Corporation.

Queen Mary's opened in 1925 as a girls' preparatory boarding school at Duncombe Park near Helmsley and moved to Baldersby Park in 1985. Girls take GCSEs in core subjects alongside options such as French, Spanish and Latin. There is no sixth form, so girls are guided in choosing a sixth form or college at 16.

Boarding at Queen Mary's School

Boarding is open to girls from Year 3 to Year 11 and forms a small community, with most boarders on weekly or flexi arrangements alongside a smaller group of full boarders. Full boarders stay seven nights a week during term, apart from exeats, and weekly boarders stay from Sunday to Friday. International pupils are a small minority, and the school avoids grouping girls of one nationality in a dormitory.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in the main school building, with younger and older girls in separate areas, each with its own common room. Dormitories sleep three to five girls, and boarders have chill-out rooms and small kitchens. A dedicated boarding team looks after the girls, with staff on duty at weekends.

Boarding Life

After lessons, boarders join daily activities and have time to call home. Weekends bring socials and outings that girls help to plan, from theme evenings, swimming and campfire cooking on site to trips to Whitby, York and Knaresborough. The equestrian centre on the estate gives girls the chance to ride.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The non-selective school's Support for Learning team offers one-to-one sessions and small-group booster lessons, and the school reports that it supports girls with specific learning difficulties, autism and social, emotional and mental health needs. Personal tutors track progress, and a health hub with a school nurse and a counsellor supports wellbeing.

International boarders at Queen Mary's School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Queen Mary's School considers applications for any year group, and international girls can board from Year 3 to Year 11, completing GCSEs before moving on to a sixth form elsewhere. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. The school recommends that overseas girls stay for at least one academic year so they can build strong English, although applications for one or two terms are also considered. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Queen Mary's School does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels for each year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. With a mainly British pupil body and mixed-nationality dormitories, international girls are immersed in English throughout the school day and in boarding, with personal support to help them settle.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa, unless they already hold a status that allows them to study, such as EU Settled or Pre-settled Status. Queen Mary's School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and works with specialist immigration advisers who guide families through the visa process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Boarders may spend a weekend or exeat with a friend's family with the boarding team's consent, but half terms, holidays and travel still need guardian arrangements.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Queen Mary's School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Queen Mary's School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
