Culford School Overview

Culford School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, for pupils aged 1 to 18. The Nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep School and Senior School, including the Sixth Form, share 480 acres of parkland centred on Culford Hall, an 18th-century mansion. The school moved to the estate in 1935, became co-educational in 1972 and is part of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust, a group of independent Methodist schools.

Boarding is available from age 7. Prep pupils are aged 7 to 13, Senior pupils take GCSEs, and Sixth Formers study A Levels, with a Horseracing Diploma among the options. Facilities include an indoor tennis centre, a golf studio with a driving range, a 25m swimming pool and a recording studio.

Boarding at Culford School

More than half of Senior School pupils board, and the school community includes more than 25 nationalities. Most boarders stay full-time, with the option of going home after Saturday morning school, while part boarding during the week and occasional boarding of up to ten nights a term suit other families. Prep and Sixth Form pupils have the same choices.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Prep boarders live in Cadogan House, with boys on the first floor and girls on the second, in dormitories usually shared with pupils from the same year. The house is run by the Head of Boarding with a deputy, a Matron and resident house staff. In the Sixth Form, Lower Sixth boarders have twin or single study bedrooms and Upper Sixth boarders have their own rooms.

Boarding Life

Prep boarders follow a clear routine, with activities after school, dinner at 5.30pm, prep on set evenings and lights out at 9.15pm, plus a weekly boarders' barbecue. Weekends bring all-day trips, local outings and in-school activities, and older boarders enjoy outings to London, theatre and cinema trips, mountain biking and go-karting.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Development department serves the Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools, supporting pupils with mild specific learning difficulties who can work independently in mainstream lessons. Specialist staff teach pupils individually or in pairs, using a multi-sensory approach. Every Senior pupil has a member of house staff and a tutor, and the school has its own Medical Centre.

Every international boarder at Culford School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Culford School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Culford School accepts international boarders from age 7, with the Prep School, a one-year Pre-GCSE course in Year 9 and the Sixth Form as the main routes for students from overseas. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Culford asks Sixth Form applicants for IELTS 6.0 or the equivalent. For younger pupils, English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

The Year 9 Pre-GCSE course gives international students individual language support from specialist teachers, building confidence in spoken and written English, academic vocabulary and study skills before GCSE courses begin.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Culford School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and provides guidance on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and the visa process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Culford requires every pupil whose parents live outside the UK to have an appointed guardian, and recommends guardianship agencies registered with AEGIS. Apart from the first day of term, the school can arrange shared taxi transfers to and from airports with drivers trained to meet and escort young travellers.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Culford School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Culford School's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Culford School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Culford School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Culford School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
