Learn More →Woodhouse Grove School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school at Apperley Bridge, West Yorkshire, on a 70-acre campus between Bradford and Leeds. It educates pupils aged 3 to 18: the junior school, Brontë House, takes children from nursery to Year 6, and The Grove covers Years 7 to 13. Founded in 1812 by Wesleyan Methodists, the school has been fully co-educational since 1985 and is part of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust, a group of Methodist schools across England and Wales.
Pupils work towards GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers three pathways that combine A Levels or BTECs, with an optional Extended Project Qualification, or pair study with work experience. Apperley Bridge railway station, opposite the school, has direct trains to Leeds and Bradford.
Boarding is open to pupils from Year 7 to Year 13, with space for around 80 boarders; international students make up no more than about 10% of the school. Long-term boarding is the main option, with only one exeat weekend a year. Short-term stays and ad-hoc nights for day pupils are also available.
Boys live in Brodwell House, a modern three-floor house with kitchens on every floor and 44 beds in twin rooms, each with an en-suite shower room. Girls board in Miller House, the original boarding house on the top floor of the main building, which has 37 beds in single and twin rooms with shared bathrooms and a snug for younger boarders. Each house has a resident House Parent and tutor team.
Supervised prep begins at 6.30pm after the evening meal, lasting from one hour in Years 7 to 9 to two hours in the Sixth Form, and bedtimes are staggered by age. Evening activities include crafts, swimming, the gym and board games. Saturdays centre on sports fixtures and free time, and Sundays bring excursions such as go-karting, walks and stately homes.
The Learning Support department, established for more than 30 years, supports around 10% of pupils, including those with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ASD, ADHD, SEMH and visual or hearing impairments, and arranges exam access such as extra time or a reader. Every boarder has a personal tutor.

The school does not publish minimum English levels by year of entry, and English is assessed as part of the application. International pupils in Years 7 to 11 attend at least one ESOL lesson a week, and younger students aim to complete IGCSE English by the end of Year 11. Sixth Form students who need it work towards an overall IELTS score of 6.5. Support is given in small groups or one to one, and each overseas student has an English-speaking mentor.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Woodhouse Grove School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and works with immigration consultants who contact families directly when a visa is required, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Woodhouse Grove School requires every overseas boarder to have a registered UK guardian, a responsible adult aged over 25 who lives permanently in England. The school recommends AEGIS or BSA approved guardians wherever possible.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Woodhouse Grove School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
