Framlingham College Overview

Framlingham College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Framlingham, Suffolk, for more than 600 pupils aged 2 to 18. The Senior School and Sixth Form occupy a site overlooking Framlingham Castle, while Framlingham College Prep School, from Nursery to Year 8, is based in the nearby village of Brandeston. The school has a Church of England foundation and is part of Mill Hill Education Group, a family of independent schools that includes Mill Hill School in north London.

Senior pupils work towards GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels alongside BTEC courses. Classes have a maximum of 20 pupils up to GCSE and are nearer 10 in the Sixth Form.

Boarding at Framlingham College

Around 400 pupils board, including students from around 20 countries. Senior pupils choose full boarding, seven nights a week, weekly boarding from Monday until after Saturday matches, or flexi boarding on fixed nights. Full boarding at Brandeston is open from Year 3 to Year 8. International pupils can join for a single term, a year or longer.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

The Senior School has seven houses: four for boys, Garrett, Kerrison, Rendlesham and Stradbroke, and three for girls, Moreau, Pembroke and Victoria, with a further boarding house at the Prep School. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with residential staff, tutors and a Matron. Younger boarders share dormitories, while sixth formers usually have single rooms.

Boarding Life

Senior pupils have lessons on Saturday mornings and sport in the afternoon, after which the boarding weekend brings social, cultural and sporting activities. Trips include Cambridge, Norwich and London, the Suffolk Heritage Coast and Snape Maltings. Overseas pupils can stay in school over the two exeat weekends each term. More than 100 co-curricular activities run from CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award to debating and drone flying.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Housemasters, Housemistresses and tutors are each pupil's first point of contact, backed by one-to-one mentoring and counselling. The school takes a whole-school approach to learning support, working with pupils, parents and outside professionals. International pupils have a dedicated coordinator and a buddy system, and sixth formers use study periods in their houses or the Sixth Form Centre.

International boarders at Framlingham College are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Framlingham College welcomes international boarders at the Prep School, where full boarding starts in Year 3, and at the Senior School, which runs from Year 9 through the Sixth Form to Year 13. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils in Years 9 to 11 who need extra help take English as an Additional Language in place of mainstream English, with six lessons a week. In Years 12 and 13, EAL is an additional subject taught in two weekly lessons, suited to students who need an English qualification for university entry.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Framlingham College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and works with a specialist visa partner, which issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place is confirmed. The visa application itself is submitted by parents, and overseas pupils must also hold private medical insurance. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
