Learn More →Heathfield School is an independent day and boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18, set in 36 acres on the outskirts of Ascot, Berkshire, around 30 miles from central London. Founded in 1899, the school absorbed St Mary's School, Wantage, in 2006 and has since merged with the Mill Hill School Foundation, making it part of the Mill Hill Education Group, a family of independent schools.
Long a girls' school, Heathfield is becoming fully co-educational in stages, beginning with a co-educational Sixth Form, followed by boys' entry into Years 7 and 9. The school is intentionally small, and pupils take GCSEs and IGCSEs before A Levels and the Heathfield Leadership Award in the Sixth Form.
Around 90 pupils board, from Year 7 to Year 13, and day students make up a little over half of the roll. Alongside full boarding, families can choose weekly boarding from Monday to Friday or part-time boarding for one to three nights a week. International boarders come from countries including Spain, Japan, China, Mexico and Thailand.
Younger boarders in Forms I to III, the equivalent of Years 7 to 9, sleep in year-group dormitories, while pupils from Form IV to the Lower Sixth have rooms of their own. Boarding houses include Bronte and Wyatt, where older students build independent living skills. Boarders are cared for by an experienced boarding team with on-site medical support.
The school day ends with co-curricular activities, and staff are on hand to help boarders with evening prep. Weekends follow a structured, age-appropriate programme of sport and activities, and parents may take boarders out for meals. Drama and music events take place each term.
Pupils are baseline tested on entry, and the learning support department, led by the SENCo with literacy and numeracy teachers, records strategies in Individual Learning Plans shared with teachers. Support covers specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, some pupils receive weekly one-to-one lessons at additional cost, and staff assess for exam access arrangements. Sixth Formers meet their tutor daily and have their own Cadogan Sixth Form Centre, and an on-site counsellor supports wellbeing.

Heathfield School accepts international boarders from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, ages 11 to 18. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. Sixth Form applicants are expected to be on track for at least six GCSE or IGCSE passes at grades 9 to 4, with a grade 6 in each subject they plan to continue to A Level. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Heathfield School does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels. International applicants sit a language assessment and need enough English to follow the mainstream curriculum. A dedicated EAL specialist provides an induction programme on arrival, followed by individual or small-group lessons in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation, with subject support and translation help for younger pupils. Students can prepare for the Cambridge B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency qualifications, and the school arranges IELTS exams in London or Berkshire, with coaching for university applicants.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Heathfield School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register in its own right, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Heathfield School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
