Tudor Hall School Overview

Tudor Hall School is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18, set in 46 acres at Wykham Park near Banbury in north Oxfordshire, about 25 minutes from Oxford. Founded in 1850 by the Reverend T W Todd and his wife, it has a Church of England foundation and is part of Mill Hill Education Group, a group of independent schools.

Girls take GCSEs and IGCSEs, then choose from 29 A Level and equivalent courses in the Sixth Form, with the Extended Project Qualification as an option. A one-year Pre A Level Programme prepares international students without GCSEs for Sixth Form study.

Boarding at Tudor Hall School

More than 200 of the school's roughly 300 pupils board, most of them full time, and around 15 per cent of boarders come from overseas, from countries including France, Brazil, Spain, Japan and Hong Kong. Years 7 and 8 can choose full, weekly or occasional boarding, and from Year 9 the options are full or partial boarding. Girls may stay in school over exeat weekends for an additional charge.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarding is organised by year group, so each girl lives with her whole year as it moves up the school. Years 7 and 8 have their own area of the main Manor House, with a garden and play space, Years 10 and 11 each have their own house, and the Sixth Form live in Inglis and Ashtons, a purpose-built house. Each house has a Housemistress, a Deputy Housemistress and boarding support staff.

Boarding Life

From Year 9 a full weekend activity programme is central to boarding, with closed weekends at the start and end of each term, and younger girls can join optional Saturday morning enrichment. Evenings in the houses include film nights, crafts and baking, and facilities include a sports hall, gym, glass-roofed outdoor pool and hockey and lacrosse pitches.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning support teachers write a Pupil Passport with each girl who needs extra help, and the Good Schools Guide records provision for specific learning difficulties and autism. Registered nurses staff the Health Centre around the clock, counsellors accept self-referrals and a resident chaplain offers a confidential listening service.

International boarders at Tudor Hall School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Tudor Hall School usually admits international boarders in Year 7, with Year 9 a common second entry point, places in Years 8 and 10 when available, and Sixth Form entry at Year 12. The Pre A Level Programme for students aged 15 or 16 without GCSEs has a two-term option starting in January. Most students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Tudor Hall does not publish minimum English levels by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Before arrival, new students whose first language is not English discuss their language needs online with the EAL Co-ordinator, and individual or small-group EAL lessons can then be timetabled. The Pre A Level Programme includes English tuition.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Tudor Hall School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Alongside term-long places in some year groups, Tudor Hall runs a residential Immersion Programme in June for girls aged 11 to 17. Students stay for one to three weeks, board alongside full-time pupils, have two EAL lessons a week and join evening activities and weekend trips. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.
