International School of Creative Arts Overview

The International School of Creative Arts (ISCA) is an independent, co-educational boarding school in Ascot, Berkshire, for students aged 15 to 19 who want to specialise in art and design before university. Founded in 2009 in partnership with University of the Arts London and now fully independent, it has moved from South Buckinghamshire to a campus within the grounds of Heathfield School, next to Windsor Great Park, where it runs its own teaching, studio and boarding spaces.

Students aged 15 can start on the Pre A Level Creative Arts Programme, which can lead to a Level 2 Cambridge Technicals qualification. The two-year A Level programme covers Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Fashion and Textiles, 3D Design and History of Art, with English as a foreign language also available. Older students can join a Portfolio Programme or complete A Levels and a Foundation Diploma in one year.

Boarding at International School of Creative Arts

ISCA is a full boarding school, and every student lives on campus. With fewer than 100 boarding places it is a small, international community, and almost all students speak English as an additional language.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in accommodation on the Heathfield site set aside for ISCA students. Resident tutors, a house mother and boarding supervisors look after them, with at least two boarding staff on site throughout evenings, nights and weekends. Younger students are placed close to the house mother, and boys and girls live in separate areas.

Boarding Life

After lessons, students spend time on self-directed studio work or join timetabled activities and sport. At weekends the school organises sports fixtures and cultural activities, and the campus offers playing fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool and a theatre. Students also exhibit their work locally, including in Windsor.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Small classes allow tutors to follow each student's work closely, with a strong emphasis on portfolio preparation for art and design degrees, and University of the Arts London is a leading destination. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

Every international boarder at International School of Creative Arts must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at International School of Creative Arts

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official International School of Creative Arts website.

Information for International Students and Parents

International School of Creative Arts accepts international boarders from age 15: the Pre A Level Programme from 15, the two-year A Level programme from 16, and A Level Year 2 or the Portfolio Programme from 17 for students who already hold at least one A Level or a high school diploma. Every programme expects a suitable art and design portfolio. Most international students join in September; entry at other points is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

ISCA sets a minimum English level of CEFR B1 for non-native speakers on every programme:

  • Pre A Level Programme (age 15 and over): CEFR B1
  • A Level Programme (age 16 and over): CEFR B1
  • A Level Year 2 or Portfolio Programme (age 17 and over): CEFR B1, with overall IELTS 5.0 and at least 4.5 in each component recommended for university progression

Applicants under 18 without an external test result can take the school's own English test, while applicants aged 18 or over need a Secure English Language Test.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. International School of Creative Arts is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

ISCA requires every student whose parents live overseas to have a UK guardian, whatever their age. The guardian must live in the UK, be able to take on delegated parental responsibility and speak English and the parents' language fluently. Professional guardianship organisations must be members of AEGIS.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for International School of Creative Arts boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination, including transfers from London Heathrow, and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms International School of Creative Arts's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at International School of Creative Arts, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with International School of Creative Arts is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. International School of Creative Arts may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
