Learn More →St Mary's School Ascot is an independent Roman Catholic boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18 in Ascot, Berkshire, set in 55 acres around 45 minutes from London. It was founded in 1885 by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the religious order begun by Mary Ward, and Catholic faith remains central to school life. Admission gives preference to Roman Catholic girls.
The school has around 400 pupils, about 120 of them in the Sixth Form. Girls study a broad curriculum to GCSE, including Latin and a choice of modern languages, before taking A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification also offered. Classes up to GCSE average around 13 pupils.
St Mary's is a full boarding school: around 95 per cent of girls board full time, with a small number of day places for local families. Boarders spend weekends in school, where Heads of House run an activities programme and Sunday Mass is part of the week.
Girls from Year 7 to the Lower Sixth belong to one of six Houses, each led by a resident Head of House with a tutor team. Years 7 to 9 share rooms with girls of their own age, most Year 10 girls share, and Year 11 girls have their own rooms. Sixth Formers move to purpose-built town houses around the Mary Ward and Mary Breen courtyards, with study bedrooms and shared kitchens; Upper Sixth rooms in Mary Breen are all en-suite.
Each year group has its own common room, where residential staff join girls in the evenings, and teaching staff are often around after lessons and at weekends. Girls take part in societies, sport, music and drama, and Sixth Form House Captains organise House events.
All girls are screened in their first term, with small group workshops in Years 7 and 8 and targeted interventions and drop-in sessions from Year 9. The Good Schools Guide notes group and one-to-one help for dyslexia and dyspraxia. A Health Centre in the boarding area is staffed 24 hours a day, and a School Counsellor is available at lunchtimes and in the evenings.
