Learn More →Papplewick School is an independent preparatory school for boys aged 6 to 13 in Ascot, Berkshire, offering day, weekly and full boarding. Founded in 1947 and run as a charitable trust since 1964, the school occupies a 15-acre site on Windsor Road, opposite Ascot Racecourse. It is a Church of England school, with short chapel services each weekday.
Classes average around 13 boys. Specialist teachers take every subject from Year 6, Latin starts in Year 5 and a scholarship set studies Greek, with schemes of work built around Common Entrance and senior school scholarship syllabuses. Most leavers move on to senior boarding schools such as Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Radley.
All boys board from the summer term of Year 6, either as weekly boarders, who may spend Saturday and Sunday nights at home, or as full boarders, who stay in school at weekends. Younger boys often board flexibly for one, two or three nights a week.
Boarders are grouped by age under three sets of Houseparents, for Years 3 to 6, Year 7 and Year 8. Year 8 boys live in Willow House, a modern purpose-built boarding house that gives the oldest boys more independence before senior school. Boys sleep in dormitories, which they personalise with their own posters and duvet covers.
Boarders rise at 7.10am, and boys in Years 5 to 8 complete supervised prep each afternoon. After supper, boarders choose from eight to ten evening activities before hot chocolate, time with their Houseparents and lights out between 8.30pm and 9pm. Saturdays include morning lessons, chapel and afternoon matches, followed by evening entertainment for full boarders such as campfires, camping and socials with girls' schools. Sundays begin with a lie-in and a cooked breakfast, followed by trips to places such as Thorpe Park, a trampoline park and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
A Learning Support and EAL department of qualified specialist teachers offers individualised, multisensory teaching, and the school states that it celebrates neurodiversity. Boys with dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD are among those supported, and an extra tuition team gives one-to-one help to boys with mild needs.
International boarders at Papplewick School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Papplewick School website.
Papplewick School offers boarding from Year 3, and every boy boards from the summer term of Year 6. Most boys join the school in Year 2 or Year 3, although older boys also enter later year groups. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Papplewick does not publish a minimum English level. New pupils take an English language test on entry, and extra tuition may be recommended. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The EAL department teaches mainly one-to-one lessons with specialist teachers, sometimes in pairs or small groups, covering grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and speaking, and prepares boys for the Cambridge B1 Preliminary and B2 First exams. Regular British Culture courses introduce overseas pupils to British history, geography and everyday life.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Papplewick School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through the Papplewick Educational Trust, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents once a place has been confirmed. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Because weekly boarders spend Saturday and Sunday nights away from school, the choice between weekly and full boarding shapes how often a guardian is needed during term.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Papplewick School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Papplewick School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
